Building the Best Genshin Impact Team Compositions: A Complete Guide

Understand the Elemental Reaction System

Team building in Genshin Impact begins with mastering elemental reactions. These reactions multiply your damage output far beyond raw character stats. Prioritize elements that create the reactions your account needs most.

Vaporize and Melt remain the premier amplifying reactions, increasing damage by 1.5x or 2x depending on which element triggers them. Electro-charged, Overloaded, and Superconduct suit crowd control and sustained damage. Swirl and Crystallize provide utility scaling with Elemental Mastery. Dendro reactions—Burning, Quicken, Aggravate, Spread, Bloom, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon—have diversified team options significantly since the element’s full release.

Your team should typically feature two elements that react directly, or three/four elements that enable multiple reaction chains. Avoid stacking four elements with no synergy; a Diluc, Keqing, Ayaka, Xiao team looks impressive but generates virtually no useful reactions.

Balance Your Team Roles

Every functional team requires four distinct roles, though one character may cover multiple roles. Neglect any role and you will struggle with survival, energy generation, or damage windows.

The Four Core Roles

  • Main DPS: Your on-field damage dealer who consumes the most field time. Examples include Hu Tao, Arataki Itto, and Nilou.
  • Sub-DPS / Off-Field Damage: Characters who deal damage while swapped out. Xingqiu, Fischl, and Yelan excel here.
  • Support / Buffer: Provides attack buffs, damage bonuses, or resistance shred. Bennett, Kazuha, and Mona define this category.
  • Healer / Shielder: Sustains your team through enemy attacks. Zhongli, Kokomi, and Baizhu keep teams alive.

Some characters break these boundaries. Zhongli provides both shielding and resistance shred. Bennett heals and buffs attack simultaneously. Identifying these multifunctional units lets you free up team slots for additional damage or utility.

Account for Energy Requirements

Elemental Burst abilities often constitute 40-60% of a team’s total damage. If your characters cannot use their Bursts consistently, your team underperforms regardless of artifact quality.

Each character generates elemental particles when their Elemental Skill hits enemies. Same-element particles restore more energy than off-element ones. Build your team so that at least two characters share an element, or include a dedicated battery. Raiden Shogun, for instance, solves energy problems entirely for many teams with her Burst regeneration.

Character Energy Cost Recommended Battery
Xiangling 80 Bennett (same element, short skill cooldown)
Beidou 80 Fischl (consistent electro particles)
Mona 60 Any hydro character or Raiden Shogun
Eula 80 Raiden Shogun or Rosaria with Favonius Lance

Equip Favonius weapons on supports if energy remains tight. Sacrificial weapons also help by resetting skill cooldowns for additional particle generation.

Adapt to Content and Investment Level

The “best” team comp varies dramatically based on what you face and what you own. Spiral Abyss floors 11-12 demand different solutions than open-world exploration or weekly bosses.

For Abyss, build two fully functional teams rather than one perfect team. Floor 12 typically features enemy waves or single bosses with specific elemental immunities or resistances. A Pyro-heavy team struggles against Pyro Hypostasis or Pyro Slime shields. Maintain elemental diversity across both teams.

Consider your constellation and weapon availability. A C0 five-star character with a four-star weapon often loses to a fully built four-star with constellations. Xiangling at C4 with The Catch competes with limited five-star units. National Team variants—Xiangling, Xingqiu, Bennett, plus a flexible fourth—remain top-tier precisely because they use accessible four-star units.

Evaluate Team Synergies Case by Case

Meta team formulas provide starting points, but character-specific synergies elevate performance further.

Hu Tao demands health fluctuation for her passive and charged attack buffs. Zhongli’s shield prevents interruption without healing, while Xingqiu’s minor healing keeps her safely below 50% HP. Add Albedo for off-field Geo damage and Geo resonance, or Yelan for additional Hydro application and damage.

Taser teams combine Electro and Hydro for Electro-charged spam. Sucrose or Anemo Traveler groups enemies while swirled elements apply to all targets simultaneously. Beidou and Fischl provide off-field Electro; Xingqiu or Yelan supplies Hydro.

Dendro enables entirely new archetypes. Quicken teams pair Electro and Dendro for Aggravate and Spread damage, excelling with characters like Keqing, Fischl, and Tighnari. Bloom teams generate Dendro cores that Hyperbloom (Electro trigger) or Burgeon (Pyro trigger) convert into substantial additional damage. Nilou uniquely buffs Bloom cores specifically, making her the centerpiece of Bountiful Core teams that sacrifice reaction diversity for specialized explosion damage.

Test and Iterate in Practice

Theorycrafting only reveals potential. Execute your rotations in actual combat to identify problems. Record your Spiral Abyss runs and note where time is lost—setup animations, energy droughts, or survivability gaps?

Optimize your rotation order. Buffs like Bennett’s Burst, Kazuha’s swirl, and Mona’s Omen have limited durations. Sequence skills so your main DPS attacks during maximal buff overlap. Practice the exact button sequence until it becomes muscle memory.

Revisit team builds as you acquire new characters or constellations. A single pull—obtaining Kazuha, for instance—can upgrade multiple existing teams. Stay flexible and build your roster depth rather than hyper-investing in one team permanently.
